‘Importers will source FX from Ghana, others if CBN stops funding banks’

‘Importers will source FX from Ghana, others if CBN stops funding banks’

Stakeholders in the maritime industry have said the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) plan to stop the sale of foreign exchange (FX) to commercial banks will drive importers to source funds from the Republic of Benin, Ghana and Togo.

They said the plan would lead to a massive movement of funds outside the country, as well as affect the economy negatively.

The President of the Shippers Association of Lagos (SAL), Jonathan Nicol, stated that the planned stoppage of forex to commercial banks has led to panic buying of foreign exchange and could cripple the economy. See more

The Blue Economy, which is the new direction Nigeria intends to go in the effort to diversify its economy, is going to see an explosion of activities in the maritime sector more than ever before. It is going to involve exploration of economic potential that abound in the country’s waters from the ocean right down to the creeks – opportunities that may not be known to exist because efforts have never been made to explore them. ABUJA, Nigeria — On Feb. 3, the Trinity Spirit, a floating production, storage and offloading vessel, caught fire off the coast of Nigeria. Seven of 10 crew members were killed. The government’s National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) initially said no oil was spilled, but has since modified that to say that oil would not spread to the shore.

Nigeria’s environment minister, Sharon Ikeazor, said the vessel, known in industry parlance as an FPSO, was anchored in shallow waters at the Ukpokiti oil terminal, on the western edge of the Niger Delta, when there was an explosion on board. Videos posted on social media showed the ship partly submerged, with thick black smoke curling skyward. See more
